This directory tree contains tools for producing Hebrew and Yiddish with TeX.
It does not use TeX-Xet, which has its own \reverse command; instead,
absolutely everything gets reversed by ivd2dvi.

You will need the following tools:
    make
    sed
    LaTeX (or at least TeX)
    cc (or gcc)

If you want Hebrew, go to the hebrew directory and read hcdoc.tex.
Then use metafont to create the hebrew fonts. See the HOWTO file for
help. You might also want to glance at yiddish/Makefile to see how I
use ivd2dvi to left-right reverse everything.

There is also a caligraphic font. Go to the hebcalig directory and
type 'make install'.

Other fonts can be found at
ftp://ftp.cdrom.com/.1/tex/ctan/languages/hebrew/fonts/oldcode/mf/ .
The others directory includes some other fonts I am adjusting for Yiddish.

If you want Yiddish, you still need to create the hebrew fonts; see
hebrew/HOWTO and hebcalig/Makefile for help. Then you need to build
the ivd2dvi tool. Go to ivd2dvi and type 'make'. If you commonly use
several different machine architectures, you might want to type 'make
MACH=sparc' or 'make MACH=mips' or whatever; this mechanism segregates
the executable files by machine type. Then go to the yiddish directory
and read the README there.

These tools were put together by various people. The classic Hebrew
font was designed by Joel M. Hoffman. The calligraphic Hebrew font was
designed by Raphael Finkel. The ivd2dvi program was written by Larry
Denenberg. The materials in the yiddish directory were written by
Raphael Finkel, who also made slight modifications to tools in the
other directories. All may be freely distributed as long as their
original copyright notice is maintained intact and no commercial use is
made of the Hebrew font. A contribution to charity is requested for
use of the classical Hebrew font.
