On behalf or the Upsilon PI Epsilon International Honor Society for the Computing and Information Disciplines, I am pleased to announce that you have been selected to join the UPE chapter of the University of Kentucky. Traditionally we have had one initiation ceremony at the end of the spring semester; however this year we would like to recognize your outstanding performance with an initiation ceremony in the fall semester. UPE is one of the most active student organizations on campus and directly participates in outreach and enrichment activities.

If you are already a member this letter indicates that your name needs to be updated in our records. Please email jvadn0@uky.edu with your name and email address.

Upsilon Pi Epsilon recognizes academic excellence in the computing sciences, has more than 150 chapters in various colleges and universities in North America and overseas, and is the only honor society that is recognized by the ACM and the IEEE-CS. UPE receives extensive support from Microsoft Corporation and IBM Corporation. Funds received from these two corporations are used to fund the UPE scholarship awards. More information about the organization can be found at http://www.acm.org/upe.

Invitations to the UPE Chapter are based on very selective criteria and only excelling students are invited. The induction of new members into Upsilon Pi Epsilon is scheduled for Tuesday, December 16, 2003 at 7:00 PM in the Gallery of the Young Library. The induction ceremony will be followed by refreshments and the election to fill positions for graduating officers. If anyone wishes to run for office who is not present, they should send an email to jvadn0@uky.edu with the office they desire to run for and a paragraph stating the reason they should be elected to that position.

We hope that you will accept this invitation and we ask that you please print off and complete the RSVP form attached along with this invitation. Additionally, it is located at www.cs.uky.edu/~jurek/UPE/upersvo.htm. Please return the completed form to the main office of the Computer Science department in 773 Anderson Hall. It is important that you contact us no later than Wednesday afternoon, December 10, 2003 as we need to inform the National Chapter with the names of joining candidates.

There is a one-time membership fee of $35 for students. This fee entitles the member to a certificate and the UPE carat-clad keypin. This fee helps to cover various costs and also provides a free ACM membership for one year for students. A check written to the Department of Computer Science should be returned with your RSVP letter. Students who are interested to join and the membership fee causes a hardship should explain the situation in their letter to be considered for limited support.

I am pleased to invite you and I look forward to receiving your responses.

Jon Vadney, UPE President
